LIU, JI YUAN (刘济源) (Simplified Chinese) is a famous Chinese Architect in the 20th century. The Founder N. Liu's grandparents Ji Yuan Liu (刘济源) & Jia Ning Liu (刘家宁) are the Founders (创始人) of China Communications First Highway Survey, Design and Research Institute Co. Ltd (referred to as "China Communications First Highway Survey, Design and Research Institute"), formerly known as "First Highway Survey, Design and Research Institute of the Ministry of Transportation" (中交一公院), the ancient organization in expressways, highways, bridges, railways industries in China (Est. 1952), currently named as CCCC First Highway Consultant CO. Ltd. Its inheritance company is called China Communications Construction Corporation (www.ccccltd.cn) (中国交建). He was awarded the first NATIONAL ENGINEERING SURVEY AND DESIGN MASTER of CHINA at Ministry of Transportation in 1990. He worked on Expressways, Highways and Bridges industries in China over the half century. He designed and geotechnically investigated over 100 bridges starting from 1950, such as Xiangtan Xiang River bridge (湘潭湘江大桥) & bridge at Yellow Tiger Harbor (黄虎港) in Hunan province, Nanping bridge on Min River (闽江南平大桥) in Fujian province, bridge on Xuan Hua Yang River (宣化洋河) & Ye River (冶河) in Hebei province, bridges on Wei River (渭河), Yangtze River(长江), Huangpu River(黄浦江), Yellow River(黄河) and some multinational bridges such as Gilgit Suspension Bridge (吉尔吉特吊桥), Takte Suspension Bridge (塔科特吊桥) (Both built in 1960s) etc. He was an early member to work on different bridge structures, such as arch bridge, cable-stayed/suspension bridge, T-shaped rigid frame bridge etc. He designed and geotechnically investigated over 6000km expressways and highways, such as the highway in Tianshan Mountains, Qinghai-Tibet. He designed and geotechnically investigated the first expressway (Jingjintang expressway) in China in 1970's. Jingjintang(京津塘) expressway connects Beijing, Tianjin, surrounding cities. The standard, graphic design, computation and regulation of Jingjintang Expressway were issued under his editorship. This extraordinary high-technology work has large-scale economic and political meanings for China with many awards. It is a milestone in the history of the national communication system. It's called the "Root" of China's expressway. He wrote and edited the National Transport Technology Standard and Design Manual. He had many publications with different journals since 1950. In the autumn of his life, he worked as the senior advisor and committee for for a few expressways connecting critical cities, such as Fokai (Foshan(佛山)-Kaiping(开平)) expressway etc.; a few complex architectural systems including expressways, bridges and tunnels, such as The Second Nanjing Yangtze Bridge(南京长江二桥), Hongkong-zhuhai-macau bridge(港珠澳大桥).
LIU, JIA NING (劉家寧)(Traditional Chinese) (born in 1923)
LIU, JIA NING (刘家宁) (Simplified Chinese) (LIU, JI YUAN's spouse), is a famous female Chinese Architect in the 20th century. She worked on Roads & Bridges over the half century. She designed over 100 bridges with different architectural structures, such as Cable-Stayed Bridge. One example of this structure is Nan Pu Bridge (南浦大桥) in Shanghai. She designed many roads and highways, such as the highway in Tibet in 1963. She audited the National Transport Technology Standard and Design Manual. She was an early member of the professions to apply computer programming (FORTRAN language) to the complex systems of Roads and Bridges. She had many awards and many publications since 1950. In the autumn of her life, she worked as the senior advisor and committee for a few complex architectural systems, such as Arun Banner(阿荣旗)-Beihai (北海) expressways, Hongkong-zhuhai-macau bridge(港珠澳大桥).
Liu, Ji Yuan and Liu, Jia Ning's older son Liu, X. Y. and his spouse Sun, X. Q. also worked on some impressive highways, expressways projects located at Liuzhou(柳州) in Guangxi province, Xi'an(西安) and surroundings in Shaanxi province,Zhangye(张掖) in Gansu province,Arun Banner(阿荣旗)-Beihai (北海) etc.
